Resumo
Tourism-led regeneration projects have proliferated in cities across the globe in what some authors term a process of touristification. The production of urban ambiances catering to the tourist desire to experience the “authentic” and “real” life and culture of a city destination has played a significant role in this process. While this impact on urban transformation processes has gained widespread acknowledgement, little attention has been paid nonetheless to the specific role that atmospheric production plays in the (re)making of touristic places. How do tourism and city development affect the ambiances lived in the urban context? How do sensory experiences participate in creating particular urban ambiances and sites for tourist consumption? Furthermore, what is the role of atmospheric production in relation to the physical regeneration and marketing of contemporary tourist destinations?

This Advanced International Seminar brings together scholars from different geographic locations and fields of study to discuss the impact of tourism on the urban environment, with an emphasis on the notions of "ambience" and “atmosphere” as tools to explore the physical regeneration and sensory transformation of contemporary tourist sites. This seminar is part of the activities of the SR&TD FCT Project “Sounds of Tourism” (PTDC/ART-PER/32417/2017).
