Bureaucracy and Disappearance: An Archaeological Perspective on the Footprints of Dictatorship in the Present

2019. Inglés

Resumo
How is the management of unknown dead bodies (usually named ‘indigent’) part of a bureaucratic structure of disappearance? Based on the concept of bare life (Agamben, 1995) and lives that are grievable (Butler 2016), my presentation will discuss, from an archaeological perspective, how to move beyond a discussion of inclusion as a means to reveal underrecognized structures. To do so, I examine a case study from Brazil, analysing documents produced for the bureaucratisation of death during Brazil´s dictatorship, from 1964-1985.
