Resumo
Mass graves, often perceived as deviations from social burial norms, obscure individual identities and the circumstances of death. Efforts to locate, excavate, and commemorate these graves serve diverse legal, historical, and humanitarian purposes. The history of mass grave interventions is tied to evolving international law, warfare, and forensic science. In the nineteenth century, mass grave management reflected humanitarian conventions and the impact of mechanized warfare. After Second World War, a legal framework emerged around crimes against humanity. From the 1980s onward, interventions expanded globally, notably in Argentina. The 1990s saw the establishment of ad hoc tribunals, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Rwanda (ICTR). NGOs including the EAAF played key roles in forensic investigations. This period marked the “forensic turn,” where scientific approaches were increasingly applied to historical conflicts, including the Spanish Civil War and First World War.Mass grave interventions vary by context—some state-orchestrated, others grassroots-driven, as seen in Guatemala. Emerging decolonial and feminist approaches highlight new critical perspectives. Many graves remain unexhumed due to logistical, political, or religious reasons. Population displacement and border changes further complicate recovery efforts, as in Cyprus and Palestine.Beyond forensic analysis, mass graves are profound sites of memory and mourning, shaping historical narratives and collective identity. Their treatment must strike a balance between technical investigation and cultural significance, acknowledging the political, social, and emotional dimensions of these spaces. While forensic science provides critical evidence, mass graves also function as material testimonies to trauma, resistance, and remembrance.
