Collaborative Discourses and Interdisciplinary Research in Heritagisation Processes: The Case of the Pilgrimage from Santiago to Finisterre

2016. Inglés

Resumo
Studies of heritage and the management of heritage have traditionally involved historians, architects, art historians and archaeologists. This situation has changed over recent decades since other disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology and economics, started to focus on heritage-related issues. However, holistic approaches to the critical study of specific questions regarding heritagisation processes still need to be fully developed.

The exploration of interdisciplinary approaches and methods with regard to heritage is a useful tool to understand/identify/study the consequences of heritagisation processes and to interpret complex social phenomena, such as the gap between heritage management and local stakeholders. In particular, we will focus on the methodological challenges related to interdisciplinarity and team work when trying to analyse this gap while exploring the logic underneath the discontinuities and distance between heritage policies and local expectations regarding heritage.

Our analysis is based on fieldwork conducted along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route to Finisterre as part of a research project that focuses on the effects that this route is having on the local populations and the heritagisation processes involved. This case study brings together various disciplines -anthropology, sociology, archaeology- and various methods -ethnographic fieldwork, surveys and archival work
