Islamization and ceramics. Assembling change and Con-Text

2025. Inglés

Resumo
In this work, I present some reflections about Islamization in the periphery of an early Islamic polity, al-Andalus, and its manifestation in ceramics. To this end, I offer a very brief overview of the concept of Islamization: not as a time-bounded and unilineal process of transformation, but as the continuous hermeneutical process of production of Muslim individuals. This can be studied in archaeology from a posthumanist, Deleuzean theoretical perspective that considers Islamization as the result of the linkage of stratified assemblages with immanent haecceity. My case study considers ceramics between the 7th and the 11th century in the Vega of Granada, and with more particular emphasis those of the first half of this period: AD 650-925
