Living Heritage? The forgotten materiality of Transhumance. An approach from Landscape Archaeology and the use of non-invasive methodologies in the Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park (La Rioja)

2022. Spanish

Summary
Until a few decades ago, the Iberian Peninsula was crossed by transhumant livestock routes. However, the decline of their transit caused them to become practices and places that are little present in our collective memory.

The Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park is an area of great historical significance for Transhumance. However, the importance of its value and protection lies essentially in its natural elements, not including Transhumance in the Park's legislation and protection policy. This situation simplifies transhumant cultural heritage and the creation of values in an aging and depopulated area.

The aim of this work is to show the complexity and dynamism of the transhumance cultural landscape in the western area of Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park through the location and spatial analysis of material evidence of Transhumance, from a Landscape Archaeology perspective using remote sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems.
