Summary
This paper presents initial findings from eye-tracking experiments conducted in the Material Minds Lab (INCIPIT-CSIC, Santiago de Compostela) as part of the Material Minds (XSCAPE) ERC Synergy project. This interdisciplinary project brings together neuroscience, cognitive science, archaeology, and anthropology to investigate how material forms are shaped by both historical processes and cognitive mechanisms. The experiments presented here focused on prehistoric pottery from diverse European regions, analyzing the eye movements and visual behavior elicited by each object. Through this approach, we assess hypotheses on societies' "internal models" and explore how these artifacts reflect both the rationalities of their beholder, as well as the societies that created them.
