Utopian Rituals: Performing the Revolution in Angola

2017. English

Summary
In this paper I propose to discuss how the utopia of a political revolution is enacted in present-day Angola, on behalf of a new generation of political activists (The Revolutionary Movement) and in the framework of the growing movements of contestation against the country's current regime. Invoking theories of ritual, performance and event, I will explore how, in a country in which political praxis and debate are suffocated by acts and processes of silencing and repression, current activism takes place mostly through processes of 'micro-utopias', performances that materialize the dialectic of repression/resistance into political facts.
