Following the outcome of the Special Meeting of 9 January 2026, in which a record number of members voted in favour of the proposed motions, the INCIPIT Faculty acknowledges this moment as a clear expression of the collective will of the Association. The subsequent decision of the Executive Board to step down reflects that this voice has been heard. In this context, and despite the serious concerns we have previously expressed, INCIPIT will remain a Corporate Member of the European Association of Archaeologists. This decision reflects our commitment to supporting efforts that reinforce democratic governance within the Association, to encouraging broad participation in the upcoming elections, and to working toward rebuilding trust across the membership. At the same time, we stress that the motions adopted at the Special Meeting cannot be disregarded or diluted. While we recognise that the current transitional situation limits the capacity of the outgoing Board to act, this must not result in delay, deferral, or the erosion of their substance. Their implementation should be treated with the utmost urgency by the incoming Board. We therefore expect the next Executive Board to take up this mandate with clarity and responsibility. The current process must lead to tangible outcomes; it cannot be reduced to procedural management or deferred through mechanisms that risk weakening the decisions already taken.INCIPIT remains committed to the EAA as a dynamic international forum. That commitment, however, is inseparable from the principles that give such a forum meaning: institutional accountability, and the recognition that archaeology and heritage are inseparable from the social and political realities in which they are embedded.
