Isn?t it all about money? Disentangling archaeology and capital

2017. English

Summary
How much does archaeology cost? Who benefits? How? Archaeological practice is not alien to the globalized capitalist system and is fully immerse in its dynamics. Not only ?doing? archaeology means moving the gear of capital, but nowadays we also ?consume? heritage in the most literal sense of the word.

While we cannot escape this model, this class aims to critically analyse and understand the way the system works, and how it affects our daily practice and society in ways we normally do not realise. It will also highlight other resistance models that try to operate aside of the system, or with a positive and responsible outcome. Focus will be on the development of (commercial) archaeology in different areas of the world, understanding the way money moves around archaeological practice in different contexts and with different consequences.
